The initial quote for designing and developing a website or web application is rarely the only cost you will incur. After launch, there may be recurring expenses for domains, hosting, security, backups, third-party services, maintenance, and other infrastructure. When these costs aren't explained during the initial project, business owners can understandably feel like they are being charged for things they weren't expecting. The good news is that most of these costs aren't really "hidden." They are simply part of running a modern website.

Here's a practical breakdown of the ongoing costs of web development in Kenya and what you should expect to pay.

1. Domain Registration

Your domain is your website's address, such as yourbusiness.co.ke or yourbusiness.com.

A domain usually needs to be renewed every year.

Typical costs

  • .co.ke: Approximately KES 1,000–1,500 per year

  • .ke: Approximately KES 3,000–5,000+ per year

  • .com: Approximately KES 1,500–3,500+ per year

  • .org: Approximately KES 1,500–3,500+ per year

Prices vary depending on the registrar (e.g., Truehost can charge differently from Hostinger), promotions, taxes, and the particular domain extension.

Some companies advertise very cheap first-year domain prices but charge considerably more at renewal. Before registering a domain, ask about the renewal price, ownership, transfer options, and any additional fees.

Tip: Your business should ideally control its own domain registration rather than leaving ownership entirely in the hands of your developer.

2. Web Hosting and Server Infrastructure

Hosting is where your website's files, database, and application run. This can range from inexpensive shared hosting to dedicated cloud infrastructure.

Shared hosting

The important point is that more expensive hosting isn't automatically better. The infrastructure should match the application's actual requirements.

Some have free tiers, while others charge based on usage or require annual subscriptions. These aren't necessarily development fees. They are operational costs associated with running the application. For example, a payment integration may involve transaction fees from the payment provider, while an application sending thousands of emails every month may require a paid email delivery service.

5. Website Maintenance

Launching a website doesn't mean development is permanently finished. Web technologies change constantly. Servers receive updates, dependencies become outdated, browsers change, and security vulnerabilities are discovered. Without maintenance, a website can eventually become unreliable or insecure.

Website maintenance can include software updates, framework updates, security patches, database maintenance, bug fixes, backup management, uptime monitoring, performance monitoring, and technical support.

For businesses that require ongoing technical support, maintenance packages may range from approximately KES 5,000–50,000+ per month. The actual cost depends heavily on the complexity of the website and the amount of support required.

A simple five-page business website doesn't need the same maintenance budget as a SaaS platform processing thousands of transactions.

6. Backups and Data Recovery

Backups are easy to overlook—until something goes wrong. A website can lose data because of server failure, human error, hacking, software problems, accidental deletion, or database corruption. A proper backup strategy should ideally include automated backups stored separately from the primary server.

Before starting a project, ask your developer or agency to provide two separate budgets: the initial development cost and the estimated annual operating cost. The development cost should cover everything required to design, develop, test, and launch the website.

The operating cost should cover recurring expenses such as domain renewal, hosting, email services, SMS, payment processing, third-party software, backups, security, and maintenance. This simple separation can prevent many unpleasant surprises.

The Real Cost of a Website

The cheapest website isn't necessarily the most affordable website. A KES 50,000 website that constantly experiences downtime, requires frequent emergency fixes, or loses customer data can ultimately cost more than a properly engineered KES 200,000 solution.

At the same time, expensive infrastructure isn't automatically justified either. The goal should be appropriate technology at an appropriate cost. A small business website may only need inexpensive hosting, a domain, and occasional maintenance. A large e-commerce platform or SaaS application may require considerably more infrastructure and ongoing technical support. The best development agency should be able to explain why each recurring cost exists, what it provides, and whether you actually need it.

"How much will it cost to run?"
